Recurring arrhythmia

by Irene, Sep 10, 2003 12:00AM
I had an AV node ablation for sick sinus syndrome two years ago, which was very successful and allowed me to come off all of the drugs (except Aspirin).  For the last few months I have had increasing incidence of central chest pain on exercise (will probably be having angiogram soon for possible angina), and have noticed - confirmed by pacemaker data - more episodes of AF.  Many of these are precipitated by exercise but as yet are not lasting too long. I am very reluctant to go back on drugs (Verapamil - betablockers ineffective) which made me feel extremely unwell. I avoid caffeine etc. Any other solutions possible, such as another ablation?  Thanks.

irene,

thanks for the post. ischemia is a common cause of arrythmias and given your anginal symptoms might be leading to some of your episodes.

fibrillation is a difficult arrhythmia to deal with. there are multiple issues including keeping your rhythm maintained, anticoagulation to prevent strokes and controlling your rate if you were to go into or stay in fibrillation. Some people benefit from an ablation to maintain sinus rhythm, most need some form of medications though. if the maintance of sinus rhythm and avoidance of any new medications is that important, my advice would be to seek evaluation in a center that specializes in atrial fibrillation.

good luck
