v-tach and swan-ganz??

by ultimategirl63, Feb 03, 2006 12:00AM
Hi there,

I need some reassuring please. My Mom went into the hospital 2 weeks ago for a heartvalve replacement they wheeled her into the OR and inserted all the lines including the swan-ganz catheder under sedation, and I guess it sent her into v-tach or V-fib?? and got her rythem back with Ameoderone Needless to say they did not go ahead with the surgery and they resceduled it for this coming Monday, I am soo scared this will happen again!!

The surgeon said that this time they will put her to sleep before the lines are placed..My question is: will her going to sleep reduce the chances of that happening again??By the way my mom is 79 years old..

Thanks

Carolyn

Hi Carolyn,

That is pretty rare to have VF from a Swann Ganz Cath.  The odds of that happening again are pretty low.  The good news is that in the right place (a hospital) with a readily available defibrillator, the risk of significant consequences is very low.  When we put in defibrillators, we induce ventricular fibrillation in every one to make sure the device works.  In the unlikely event that it owuld happen, they should be more than prepared to handle it.

I hope this helps.  Thanks for posting.
