Large right posterior fossa archnoid cyst

by brumbaugh, Aug 01, 2007 08:14PM
Hello,

They discoverd my arachnoid cyst after the birth of my child in 2004.  They performed an MRI d/t irreg. heart beat!!!!???  This MRI revealed:

1.  Posterior fossa cyst with characteristics suggestive of possible arachnoid cyst.
2.  Otherwise, negative MRI of brain without and with gadolinium.
3.  Negative intracranial MR angiofram.
4.  Subarachnoid hemorrhage is not reliable detected by MRI when it is small and if this is strongly clinically suspect, consider CT.

I then saw a neurologist who started me on several different medications to control my severe migraine in the right occipital region.  After taking these medication with no success.  I requested a 2nd scan d/t severe h/a's and no improvement with current medications.

On 3/6/06 another MRI was ordered which revealed Large Right Posterior Fossa Arachnoid Cyst .
I have currently stopped all medications d/t no success and started accupunture- which has helped decrease h/a episodes, but I continue to have severe migraines which I have to take Fiorcet.

At my recent f/u my neurologist which suddenly suggested that I get a second opinion, even though I went in there stating accupunture was helping-- but I still continued with severe migraines!
Now I am really nervous especially since it has been 3 years since I've been diagnosed.

She has stated that I have one more option- yet another medication, Depakote.
What is your opinion regarding this and should I be concerned?  Does this cyst require intervention such as surgery?  Please respond.  Thank you

I am wondering what your current status is.  My son, who is 9, has a large (in excess of 10cm wide) and they are trying him on migraine medicine to see if he is responsive prior to considering surgical options.  The migraine medicine is Depakote.
