inflammatory breast cancer concerns - pathology results

by ancmac, Apr 24, 2005 12:00AM
I am concerned my symptoms are inflammatory breast cancer.  He is the story: I am 37, breastfeeding since 8/04, and had pain ln L breast 1/05.  Found lump on tail of L breast, u/s said lymph node, it was removed and biopsed on 2/14/05.  then on 3/23 noticed what looked like enlarged pores on the opposied side of biopsy sight (inner part of breast and underneath breast) then a week later it turned pink.  Breast feels funny.  Had a skin and core biopsy done on 4/18.   Just got the pathology back, it reads as follows: Skin, left breast, punch: telangiectasia with mild superficial perivascular inflammation

no evidence of maligancy. Left breast tru-cut: mild fibrocystic changes, no evidence of malignancy.

So, now what? My breast still feels funny, the areas is still somewhat pink, and still has what looks like enlarged pores )peau d'orange) on the underside and inner side of the breast. Dr. said they will try another antibiotic.  Do you think another biopsy is warranted since only one skin punch was done?  Dr. said MRI on lactating breast won't be good since breast is active.  He thinks this is all because I am breastfeeding.  I am lost and do not know what to do.  Obviously I am GLAD that there was no maligancy found, but what is wrong w/ my breast? Any help is appreciated.  This still could be IBC, right?  Thank you in advance

Dear ancmac:  Pregnancy and nursing can cause many changes in the breast and it can be a challange to sort out breast abnormalities during these times.  The negative biopsy is reassuring, but continued continued careful follow-up is a good idea.  Telangiectasia are small, red, purple or blue blood

vessels found along the surface on the face, upper chest, neck and rarely on other parts of the body.  Telangiectasia are dilated superficial blood vessels. They may occur in rosacea, in certain systemic diseases or in long-term therapy with topical fluorinated corticosteroids; most cases are idiopathic (we don't know why they happen). Telangiectasias are NOT

malignant.  The perivascular inflammation may well explain the pinkness of the skin. Without an ability to evaluate your breast, we cannot make any diagnosis.  If you are concerned, you can certainly get a second opinion.

from a second breast specialist.
