Fibroadenoma Reappears following Lumpectomy

by Mel007, Nov 04, 2005 12:00AM
Hi, I'm a 23 year-old- female, which had a fibroadenoma (florid intraductal hyperplasia) removed three years ago. Several months ago, I went for a ultrasound of the same area because I felt a new lump slightly above the old one. I overheard the radiologist, who only analyzed the images, and radiology tech who actually saw the scar from the lumpectomy, arguing about whether I had a lumpectomy. I don't think the radiologist could explain the new growth. He insisted that the growth was probably left over from the surgery... I don't feel that this radiologist is competent.

Anyway, now that same lump is now larger than before. It has also been very sensitive to pressure, so that I can not lay on that side, but honestly it has been like this almost since I had it removed. It has only gotten worse, though.

Also there is another lump which is very hard below my right breast. They could feel this one last time, but they couldn't image it. I could definitely use some advice and would like to know what you think I should do at this point?

Dear me1007:  Without viewing the images and doing a clinical breast examination, it is impossible for us to speculate on whtat this might be.  Our recommendation, if you are uncomfortable with the information you are getting currently, is to get a second opinion from a breast specialist.  These can usually be located at large teaching institutions.
