TRAM Flap Complications

by Chloe Hiatt, Dec 12, 2005 12:00AM
After having a TRAM Flap 8 months after dose densechemotherapy with Herceptin, I developed huge abdominal seromas post operatively.  After 2 additional surgeries to put in drains I healed and now have a huge abdominal hernia where the muscle was taken.  My plastic surgeon sent me to my general surgeon who says it is much too large for a decent repair with mesh (over 9" square would be needed).  I look deformed since it is only on my left side, my left breast has never had the nipple reconstructed due to so many problems occurring and I can't exercise, wear my old clothes and am putting on weight. I can no longer exercise, therefore I get more and more depressed every day, especially since I have had a surgeon say that he doesn't think it can be fixed without major complications.  He was going to refer me to someone who might have more experience with this condition, but never called me back.  My plastic surgeon would like to try to repair it, but has never had anyone develop this problem in 19 years of practice.  He is a board certified Plastic Surgeon with great references from the hospital and patients.  Help.  Has anyone had this occur and/or does anyone fix messes like this.  It is very depressing.  I don't even want to go to my doctor's anymore.  I only cry.

Dear Chloe Hiatt:  One suggestion is to consider a second opinion at a large academic medical center where a corrective surgical procedure could be done with a team approach.  That is that experts in plastic surgery as well as general surgery might be able to work together to accomplish a procedure that would improve both function and asthetics.

Please, please, someone hear me!!!   I too have had devastating consequences from pedicle tram flap surgery in December 2001.  It is now almost January 2006 and I am still seeking some hope for this life altering surgery.  I have had three major surgeries since in hopes to correct the problem but with no avail.  I too have bulging in my abdomen,  but on the NON-SURGICAL side.  The rectus muscle which was removed and mesh inserted is not the problem.  The rectus which remains feels like a two by four which has been implanted under my chest wall and the bulging DEMANDS support of some type.  I have tried corsets, girdles, ace bandages, tape, manual support, devices made by prosethetic professionals all with no success.  This is NOT an aesthetic or vanity problem.  It limits my most basic level of function.  It is debilitating and affects not only my physical ability but my mental well being as well.

As the other victim explains, this surgery can cause absolutely life destroying ability and if there is ANYONE out there who cares and  who is not afraid to touch us, please STEP FORWARD!!!!
