RIGHT BREAST MASS

by chica2775, Dec 22, 2005 12:00AM
i recently had a stereotactic breast biopsy done on a lump in my right breast. The final Pathologic Diagnosis is as follows:-

FIBROEPITHELIAL LESION- BORDERLINE

THE BIOPSY SHOWS BENIGN EPITHELIAL COMPONENT. INTERVENING STROMA SHOW EXPANDED FOCI. THE FOCI SHOW IRREGULAR INFILTRATIVE BORDERS AND MODERATE CELLULARITY. HOWEVER THERE IS NO NUCLEAR ATYPIA OR MITOTIC ACTIVITY. THE FINDINGS ARE BORDERLINE BETWEEN FIBROADENOMA AND BENIGN PHYLLODES TUMOR. CLINICAL FOLLOW-UP IS RECOMMENDED.

Can you please explain what all this mean. I understand the tumor is benign, but can it reoccur, can it develop into cancer? Please help.

Dear chica2775,  The results of this biopsy sample does not demonstrate cancer.  There is a question as to whether the findings are fibroadenoma (a non-cancerous tumor) or a benign (non-cancerous) phyllodes tumor.  Phyllodes tumor referrs to lesions that can range from benign to malignant.   The findings in this specimen are benign.  These results need to be interpreted in context of test results, physical examination, any other findings.  Your physician would be best able to interpret these results for you as related to your individual situation.
