Question about sentinel node biopsy results

by Alison78, Feb 20, 2006 12:00AM
I am a 27 year old who was just diagnosed with extensive DCIS with multifocal microinvasion. I recently had a wide resection and SNB and the surgeon was unable to get clear margins, so I will have to have a radical modified mastectomy with a couple of weeks. My question is that my sentinel node biopsy came back as "rare keratin positive single cells are identified, confirmed by immunohistochemical stains for keratin". If single cells were identified, what does that mean? Are you still considered node negative? My surgeon is also going to remove more lymph ndoes at the time of my mastectomy. Thank you.

Dear Alison78:  If the lymph node has any malignant cells, even if microscopic, the node is considered positive.  In these cases, a lymph node dissection is done to remove additional lymph nodes.
