breast pain at young age

by SilverRose91983, Mar 23, 2006 12:00AM
I'm 22 years old and I have had a mild breast pain for about a week...I know that it's common to have this kind of pain before ones period (infact, i always have tenderness type pain before my period) but I've been off my period for a week. I've felt for lumps and found none. My left breast hurts when I sleep on it or lean on it. This is also the same breast that has had a sort of scab (looks like from dryness, cause i can sometimes peel of the dry skin) form on about a quarter-size area above the nipple. It has come and gone about three times in the past year. I thought it might be the bra material but I really don't think so. I'm worried because I have no insurance and I'm away at college so i haven't told my mom because i don't want to worry her if there's no need. Should I be worried about the mild pain and scab-like area at 22 years old?

Also, is it true that some bras are not good and can even cause cancer or tumors if they don't fit right or if the wire is too tight? What's the best type of bra to wear?

Dear SilverRose91983:  Breast pain is not uncommon, especialy in the weeks preceeding one's menstrual cycle.  Most breast cancer is not painful.  Breast skin is like skin anywhere else on the body and is, therefore, subject to the same skin abnormalities as any other area of the body.  If you are concerned, you should have a doctor check it out.  Bra's and other clothing articles do not cause cancer.  They can contribute to discomfort and pain, but they do not cause cancer.

By all means, make an appointment with a practitioner at the campus clinic to get the information you need to resolve your concerns.  Seems you've had them for a year, and it's time to do what you need to do so you can feel comfortable again.
