cancer and kidney failure

My friend is in kidney failure and will have to start on dialysis. Due to other health problems, she will have to have the shunt put in her neck. Drs want to do this at the same time she has a double mastectomy. She says this worries her because she's heard that exposure to air makes cancer cells "go wild" and she's afraid that having the shunt put in at the same time will increase her chances of the cancer spreading.
Is this a valid worry? DOES exposure to air spread cancer??Thanks!

Dear batwing:  It is a myth that exposure to air during surgery makes cancer cells “go wild.”  Surgery, and exposure to air, will have no impact on whether the cancer spreads.
