Breast pain

Just got my mammmography and its states that the breast parenchyma to be extreme heterogeneously dense. There is an 8mm well circumscribed nodular lession in the left auxillary junction. Recommends a sonomammography.  What does "extreme heterogeneously dense" mean? Should I be worried?

Dear wants2no, Dense breast tissue is not uncommon, particularly in young pre-menopausal women. Mammography can be difficult to interpret in women with dense breast tissue.  The terminology “Extreme heterogeneously dense” - lowers the sensitivity of mammography making it difficult to interpret the results.   Further testing may be recommended to better evaluate the breast based on interpretation of the results in context of your individual situation ie. Age, risk factors, physical examination etc.   Your doctor would best be able to discuss with you the need for any further testing.
