reqest for imediate Mamogram test

by bobena, Jun 30, 2007 12:00AM
around 5 years ago a few calfications showed up in my mamogram my doctor did not seam concerned with them, I had breast implants done around 3 years ago and had a mamo about 1 year after that which turned out fine, I missed last years mamogram and just went for one last week, it was taking longer then it normaly takes for them to get the results back to me, Usually takes about 3 days so I started to get worried on the 7th day I called my doctors office and was told that they were having technical difficultys with the primary readings, then the hospital called me and wanted me to come back in for a second reading which has never happend before. needless to say I'am worried
they said they did not get good enough film with the implants implace and seamed to be comcentrated on my left side which is were the califications showed up on prior mamograms. My mother passed from Liver cancer my aunt passed frim lung cancer and my grandmother passed from cirvical cancer,
But no one has had breast cancer, Should I be concerned with the second
reading request? This was just done this morning.

Dear bobena:  It is not uncommon for a woman to be called back for a second view, particularly when there are implants which can make good mammograms difficult to obtain.  Very often, the radiologist needs to do a spot compression to focus on a specific area. Sometimes tissue may fold over and look like a mass and upon compression it clears.  Without reviewing the films, we cannot speculate on your situation but a second mammogram is not uncommon.

I have many friends who have had call backs for additional views ... even without implants. I have been told that implants do make it more difficult to obtain satisfactory views. I would find comfort in the fact that they are being very thorough. Best of luck.
