Unprotected Sex

by Lilli Elise, Jul 07, 2007 12:00AM
I knew my period was comming soon, but didn't have a specific date since I'm no longer on the pill, so last night me & my boyfriend had unprotected sex, which isnt smart, but it's not like it's the first time we did it like that, however it was the first time not bein on the pill. Today I woke up, and my period came. Is there any pregnancy possibilities since my period did come this morning?

It is highly unlikely that you could be pregnant since the absence of a period allows the blood to line the womb and create the conditions for an egg to be protected, get nutrients, etc. However, stranger things have happened - there are instances of someone having something that looked like a period and yet they were pregnant. I would buy one of the commercial pregnancy tests and use it-just to make sure. If you want quicker results, go see your doctor and get a test there.  I am not a medical doctor however, so you might want to ask this question to one of the physicians on the site.

You say you've had unprotected sex in the past, but that's not quite true--since you were on the pill you weren't at any risk of pregnancy. Now that you're off the pill and I assume not using any other methods of birth control, any time you have unprotected sex, you risk getting pregnant (and getting STDs, but that was true before, too). The fact that you got your period that morning is reassuring, but if it were me I'd still get emergency contraception. Then, unless you want to get pregnant, I'd look into a new birth control method... and soon.

I agree with monkeyflower.  I did read (somewhere) that there have been instances recorded of people having periods after unprotected sex and still getting pregnant.  You probably ought to get a pregnancy test (at the doctor's office) to be sure.

If you both want to continue having a sexual relationship AND want to avoid getting pregnant, then you are playing Russian Roulette by not using ANY sort of birth control whatever!
