worried about some symptoms herpes or yeast infection in a male

by cliff666, Jul 20, 2007 12:00AM
hello, i have been searching online far and wide for questions regarding a very big scare i am going through and some reason i cannot find the answers i am looking for. heres a background on me, i am 26 fairly decent health, uncircumsized and have not had full unprotected sex since about oct.
last friday at werk i started to get a irritation underneath the foreskin. i checked it out went to 2 differnt doctors this past week. One doctors assistant said it was herpes and prescribed to me a 7 day dose of valtrex one thing that worried me with her diagnosis is that it seemed very quick and they would not give me the test for herpes at that clinic because of my insurance company. so i decided to go get another opinion. now the thing is i have not had sex for about a month when this occurance happened and that was with protection(with exception for oral sex) and also me and the girl are actually really close friends and she was checked upon b4 we started having sex and she was negative. the last sexual partner and experience was about 6 months earlier(so shes been my only partner this year). the dr said more or less its a yeast infection but i am 50/50 in believing anything right now. i was wondering if anything can answer a few questions for me. i have a itchyness on my penis forskin, no burning while urination, or pain i do have small white spots on the foreskin but they are very tiny and i have also heard that some people have had them all their lives without even knowing.

I am sorry , I am a Ph.D, not a medical doctor. Please refer this question to Hunter Hansfield on this same site for the sexually transmitted disease questions- he can help you.

1-could the possibility of using baby powder on friday(after i shaved my lower areas) create a irritation or cause a yeast infection?
2-also how long can the virus actually stay dormant until showing infection? like i said i havent had sex in about a month. and the only 3 partners i had unprotected sex we were basically in a monogamous relationship for at least a few months or more so there is a very big trust factor with all 3.
for any answers i would be much appreciated.
thank you

Yes, you can get a blood test for herpes 2 and that should answer your questions.  Almost all insurance pays for blood work, but if yours won't, pay for it because you need to know.  Most STD checks do not include blood work for herpes, so your friend may have it and not know, too.  You could have gotten it in October and not have had symptoms until now.  They say 50% of people don't have symptoms.  1 in 5 carry it genitally and 80%+ have herpes 1 which can spread to down below, turning into genital herpes at that point.  They usually don't rush into a diagnosis so quickly, especially just an assistant.  They like to run tests of the blister or take blood.  Make sure you see the doctor the next visit.

You can also get herpes even with a condom.  Like the doctor said, seatbelts help, but don't save all lives...likewise, a condom...the problem is that many women may break out on their thighs or behind..so there you go...

To: HERPES THOUGHTS?
I've spoken to two general medical professionals and another that works with an std clinic- all are saying that receiving oral sex for one, short instance leave minimal if any risk for herpes!  All said that the only reason I'd need to get tested is for my own mentality- NOT becuase there is a risk of catching anything.  Is this accurate?
