I am new to the forum. I too had the terrible itching about 2 months ago. I was told I had high liver enzymes during a clinical study for birth control. After seeing a regular physician about the high enzymes and doing some blood work I was told I had to do a radioactive iodine scan. I was then diagnosed with graves disease. The scary thing is that my doctor told me nothing about risks involved. I saw an endocrinologist 1 and 1/2 months after the diagnosis due to lack of help from my doc and was told that I have to stop exercising and that the tubal ligation I had schedule needed to be cancelled until this is under control. She advised me that I could have died whil under anesthesia. They now have me on a beta blocker until the I 131 on wednesday. I have plans to stay in a hotel those three days after because I have 3 little ones at home. Other than that I am not really sure what to expect. I have not been checked for cancer and that is another concern. sorry for the life story........can anyone give me any insight??
itching may be related to thyroid autoimmune disease -- also can be seen in thyroid dysfunction in general -- would say it is likely related to thyroid in this case.
I am seeing an internalist now b/c my previous lab test were characteristic of hypothyrodism. I will be officially "diagnosed" on Tuesday. The point to this comment is that I have also been experiencing itching all over my body, from head to toe. I have been told that it is "ezcema." Looking back...I developed "ezcema" the same time I started exhibiting other characteristics of hypothyroidism.
I am hypothyroid and I have been seeing a dermatologist for 3 months now for severe dandruff and scalp itching, as well as a rash on my neck, none of which has responded to treatment thus far. They have me scheduled for allergy patch testing in 2 weeks but I am very suspicious that it's related to poorly managed hypothyroidism treatment. I have an appointment next week with an endocrinologist because my PCP obviously doesn't know what he's doing when it comes to thyroid disease. I'll ask her about the itchy scratchy and post her opinion after my appointment on Wednesday of next week (March 22).
Are you sure the itching isn't caused by the PTU? I had trouble with that. .no rash, just itching. Also had the same reaction on Tapazol. Just wondering.
Its funny that you mention the itching but about 2 months before I was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism I developed an itching all over my body. This was worse on my scalp I just couldn't stop scratching. At one point i thought I had head lice because my scalp was so itchy and fely very sensitive. It must be related to thyroid but don't know why!
Itching started before I was put on the PTU.
