What is a nervous breakdown exactly?  Please give me a medical and a clear definition of Nervous breakdown.

by HFHS MD-JM, Nov 14, 1999 12:00AM
Rose,

The phrase "nervous breakdown" is not used to describe any specific psychiatric disorder.  It is often used by non-medical persons to relate a state of mind in which one feels overwhelmed (with depression, anxiety, etc)and sometimes loses touch with reality(impaired reality testing).  Most often one's ability to function is reduced as a result.

I hope this was helpful.  This information is intended for general educational purposes only.  Please consult your personal physician/psychiatrist for specific health concerns.

Sincerely,

HFHS MD-JM
