Prozac and Bipolar reactions

by MS, Jun 04, 2000 12:00AM
What is the chance of having a bipolar reaction while taking prozac(for migraine headaches), if someone has had an isolated bipolar incident over 2 yrs ago,  and has been cleared of being bipolar.

Thank you,

MS

All antidepressants including Prozac carry a low risk of inducing manic or hypomanic episodes of bipolar disorder. Bipolar disorder is characterized by a chronic course of episodic exacerbation and remission, which means you have a risk of recurrence of your illness at some time or the other, with or without Prozac, especially if you are not maintained on longterm treatment with mood-stabilizers. It is unclear what you mean by "been cleared of being bipolar". Prozac would be an unusual form of treatment for migraine headaches. I suggest that you discuss your concerns further with your treating physician.
