Side effects of Imipramine

by curiousmom, Apr 12, 2001 12:00AM
Hello;

My 6 year old son has been prescribed Imipramine for bedwetting.  He was originally prescribed 10 mg/night and after 2 weeks it has been increased to 20 mg/night (unfortunately still with no progress).  I have noticed in the last roughly week or so that (just about the time that his dosage was increased to the 20 mg) he has been suffering from nightmares just about every night.  I am wondering if this is one of the very rare side effects that this medication may cause for this medication.  Also if it is something that I should book an appointment with the doctor that is filling in for my regular family doctor (as they are on holidays).  Should I not be concerned with it or what should I do?  I thank you for your help on this matter because as my nickname suggests, I am a concerned mom.

Thank you

I would like to help you, but there is a better place to get this answer and this is at the child behavior forum on this site. they would have the kind of experience necessary to answer your question.

The drug you have your son on,is primarily an Antidepressant,it has many side affects,including REM sleep changes and delirium (typical of *Anticholinergics)that could give rise to "Nightmares".

Worse yet,the drug is not a cure for bed wetting,as difficulty in urinating "enuresis" is a common side effect of this class of *TCA`s(Tricyclic Antidepressants).

Get him off the DRUG ASAP and get behaviour Therapy for him,this is the expensive approach and has the cure as opposed to the cheap drug approach that he has unfortunately become a VICTIM of.

No harm in being curious,actually,you are very good mum,with bad Doctor.
