I am Anorexic/ Bing Eating and Generalized Edema~~Please help

by Amber22, Jan 02, 2007 12:00AM
Hello,

My name is Amber. I am now recovering (in my early stages) from Anorexia Nervosa. As of now, I am only maintaining my weight. I have stopped losing. I went from 156-160lb to 97-100lb at 5’4”. I first sought group therapy, and have an appointment for individual therapy next week, as well as an appointment w/ the nutritionist and my PCP for blood work.

I guess some of my group-support discussions have triggered me to be more perceptive of my health. Sense I started weight maintenance, I noticed a few things that I figured I would bring up here (to get feedback on before my appointments—I am a little anxious now).

On the night before New Year’s Eve I became very intoxicated. The next day, all I did was drink water and binge eat. In other words, I ate just about anything I could… I was advised not to binge, but to regulate my diet with a higher calorie intake instead. I was just sooo hungry.   Today, I have very sore skin to the touch. I am so swollen in all parts of my body. I was about 7 pounds heavier on the scale today than yesterday, so I know it is edema. It is non-pitting edema.

This has happened before, and usually goes away in a day or two, and my weight will return to what it was prior to my “pig out” session. It only happens, however, if I binge eat after being intoxicated. I do not purge (vomit). What could the reasons for this be? When I bring this up at my appt. next week, is there anything serious I should be prepared to hear? Anyone ever have this before?

Could it be a vit. deficiency?

Hi Amber,

I really feel for you.  I'm so happy to read that you are getting help and are maintaining your weight.  I do not have anorexia but for years I stuggled with bulemia.  I am 47 now and the bulemia was back when I was in my late teens and into my 20's.  I know that my problem stemmed from a poor self esteem and body image.  I was overweight all my life and just in the last couple of years have found a happy medium.  Mostly, though, I love myself no matter what.

I would go out and get drunk and the next day eat crazy, like you.  I thing the alcohol would dehydrate me and I'd want salty things.  I would not purge on those days.  Looking back I realize that I wanted to punish myself by eating poorly.  I think I felt guilty for drinking like that.  Anyway, if you eat a healthy diet on a more regular basis and then on the day after getting drunk you eat poorly your body may be reacting to the toxins in the food.  It's just a thought.

I think you should look into why you are drinking.  Sometimes we do things like drink and take drugs to escape something we find hard to handle.  I hope that when you get into your individual therapy that you talk, talk, talk about everything that bothers you and your fears about the anorexia.

Good luck to you!
