Sun Poisoning?

by Misalatt, Aug 07, 2007 08:01PM
I got a very bad sunburn on Sunday. No blisters or rashes, but very painful and sensitive. This has been accompanied by a lot of unusual muscle pain in my neck and shoulders - under the skin the sunburn is affecting. Additionally, in the middle of the night last night (about 36 hours since I've had the sunburn), I started having a fever and headache, and my soft palate became inflamed - accompanied by some congestion in that area, making swallowing painful.

Are the fever/inflamation symtoms probably linked to my sun exposure? If so, how long will they last?

Dear Misalatt,

I think the exposure to the sun did cause some sun burns which is the cause of the painful and sensitive skin you have. You may use cool water and ice to help you with decreasing the itching sensation. Further, you may use emollients like Aloe vera to comfort your skin. A steroid application may also be required based on further examination.

The fever, headache and pain may be related to the sun exposure. Though the cause of the fever and accompanied features may be either the sun or some other infection, which may be in the throat region. The fever, headache and inflammation of the soft palate brings to my mind some kind of infection. However, I am not ruling heat stroke as the cause. This may only be ascertained by examination and tests to determine the cause of the fever to be either infection or a loss of temperature control by the body also called as Heat Stroke. My recommendation to you is to try and lower the fever using anti-pyretics, water and passive cooling of the body. I am wary of the degree of injury the fever will cause as well as the discomfort due to the sensitive skin and soft palate inflammation.

This may take some time to heal and you should probably see your doctor immediately.

Best regards
