medication and partial thyroidectomy

by shelly45, Aug 09, 2007 05:01PM
Is it necessary to be on medication after partial thyroidectomy? I am having my right side thyroid remove on Aug 28 and wondering. Is there anyone out there that had partial thyroidectomy and not using any thyroid medications? I am really thinking about surgery now that I realized that some people do use medication but don't know if it is for total or partial. I can't use any oral medication that will cause nausea or vomiting due to severe gastroparesis,if I certain oral meds it would flare up my gastroparesis really bad to the point that I will be hospitalized for several days until under control. Is there some other way to use thyroid medication if I needed it? I have pre-op appointment with ENT surgeon Aug 24 so I will remention it to him that way he will remember that I can not use any type of oral medication that will cause nausea or vomiting. I will be premedicated with antinausea medication before and after anaethesia due to my stomache condition. How sucessfull were your surgeries were after having partial thyroidectomy?

I haven't had a thyroidectomy, however, from what I  have read there could be a chance with  a partical that just enough thyroid is left to where  meds are not necessary.

There are injections, however I don't know much about them and this is what little I know. Levothyroxine is injected into a vein or into a muscle and is usually given once a day before breakfast  at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic.  You might be able to inject at home. A health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Levothyroxine Solution. Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions. This drug must be mixed immediately before use and not mixed  with diluent for later use.

Good Luck!

Hi Shelly, I had a partial thyroidectory in 1976 for hyperthyroid and a goiter. For 10 years I did not have to take any medication, then in 1985 I became hypo and have been on levothyroxine since then.

I had a partial thyroidectomy, (left side) in May 2008.  It's a long story of why I had the surgery. First, had a routine physical and TSH was .27 . My doc suggested an ultrasound to rule out goiter. Unfortunately what was found was a nodule. Nodule tested cold. Had biopsy, came back as follicular adenoma, but couldn't tell if it was benign or malignant. I was told by an Endo that I would need surgery. I had blood work done 2 weeks after my surgery and TSH was .6 . The Endo said my thyroid function was normal, but since I only have right side of thyroid I need to take Synthroid .25 mcg to keep the right thyroid from growing.  I feel like c***p most of the time since the surgery. It's been 2 1/2 months and my scar is still very visible. I feel like I have something stuck in my throat.  It has been almost 1 year for you. How are you today? Are you taking meds?
