UTI/Cipro

by aireamdh, Feb 09, 2007 12:00AM
I am a 49 YO woman, diagnosed with UTI one week ago, February 2nd. At the time, macrobid was prescribed. Monday morning the gyn nurse called to say due to culture results, med was being changed to Cipro. 250 mg 2X daily/ 3 days. I am also a brain tumor patient, having had a meningioma successfully resected via craniotomy 5/12/05. Had one "sensory partial seizure" before surgery, one shortly after, none since. No seizure meds since 30 days post-op nearly 2 yrs ago.  Also diagnosed Hashimotos hypothyroid 10/05. I expressed concern about using Cipro, as I have read that it does cross blood/brain barrier and can lower seizure threshold. I was told this should not be a concern, should be fine. Mostly I was but am very glad to be done with this med.   I had a worsening of a  pre-exisiting neuropathy in hands/feet,increase in anxiety, worsening of insomnia,  one rather severe headache and some bad muscle aches.  What is your opinion in reference to using this drug in patients like myself? In case the need arises again, are there other antibiotics that might work w/o these disturbing effects? I had also recently begun a 3 week course of prevacid shortly before getting the UTI, can prevacid cause UTI's??  Thank you for any assistance with these questions.

Usually the urine culture result will offer a number of antibiotics for which the infection is sensitive. You can ask your doctor to offer another antibiotic which does not cross ther blood/brain barrier.

To the best of my knowledge, prevacid should not cause you to have UTIs. If you have more than 3 culture confirmed UTI's in a 1 month period, you should ask for an evaluation to look for the cause, which can include bladder stones, and diverticula (small outpouchings in the bladder and urine tubes which collect urine leading to recurrent infections).
