UTI?

by jw88, Jul 08, 2007 12:00AM
I am 18 years of age and it seems as though ever since I began taking Ortho Tri-cyclin (a birth control pill), I have been getting recurrent UTIs. I have all of the symptoms, burning, urgency, only a few drops of urine at a time, blood in the urine, etc. When I thought that I had another infection, I had a culture done, and it came back negative. The doctor said that if he had known how insignificant it was, he wouldn't have treated it with the antibiotic. I was referred to a urologist and I am scheduled for a cystoscopy in August.

What I really want to know is if my birth control could possibly be playing a part in my feeling all of the symptoms of a UTI. If not, what else could it be? I had never had these symptoms until I began taking it last year. Please assist if you can!

Please get checked for urethritis. This can sometimes be a urethral infection with a sexually transmitted organism. If this is negative, and your urine culture is negative, you will need evaluation by a urologist to rule out bladder lesions. If this is negative, and your cervical cultures are also negative, please consider evaluation by a pelvic floor physical therapist, who may be able to identify pelvic muscle trigger points which may be cause symptoms of bladder irritation like you  are experiencing.
