Bilateral numb patches, "buzzing" in legs

by dixie chick, Aug 13, 2007 06:36PM
I'm hoping someone can help us find the answer to my husband's puzzling symptoms.  Beginning nearly 2 years ago he had a numb patch of skin which developed on his left foot.  This was followed by the same thing on the top of his left hand some months later.  At about the one year mark the same thing happened on his right hand and foot.  Symptoms start with a "stretching" and "burning" feeling on the skin and then numbness (really decreased sensitivity - he can still feel pressure and needle pricks).  He has seen several neurologists at really great facilities.  He has had:  MRI of head and neck, EMG, blood tests, genetic test for HNPP (hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies), even a consult for leprosy.  All are perfectly normal.  Meanwhile, the symptoms seem to progress.  He now has the same feeling (or lack thereof) on the outside of his knees and a burning sensation in his legs.  He has also had a strange burning sensation off and on in his tongue.  There doesn't seem to be any muscle weakness or involvement at this point.   He is an otherwise healthy 47 year old male with a stressful job like everyone else and  a wife who's worried about him and 5 kids who adore him.  We need and want him around so any help would be appreciated.  We're in the Washington, DC area.
