help please

I am in my 30’s and suffer from nasal congestion and dizziness. I am not sure what causes this I have been to a doctor and he diagnosed me as having sinus problems. I have had a CAT scan of my sinuses and found out that I have a bent septum that I have been told cuts the nasal passage airflow by 30-40%.

· Facial Pressure- I have on occasion my face feel puffed up. When I say feel I mean not from touch but from the facial pressure. I guess that most of the time when I feel puffed up, my cheeks don’t feel puffed up to the touch. It only feels puffed up when I move my mouth. I also get forehead pressure that feels like there is a line across my forehead from temple to temple.

· Congestion- I get congested on a daily basis. Rarely do both nostrils get congested together. They generally swap back and forth.

· Dizziness- I have dizzy days up to three times a week. I never have actually fainted or passed out because of it but I sometimes feel that I might. Not all the time does the dizziness coincide with the pressure and congestion. The dizziness comes during the follow:

§ When I lay back in a reclined position.

§ When I am sitting forward

§ Standing or walking around.

§ Usually worst during the morning and evenings.

§ Sitting up or standing up

The congestion and facial pressure doesn’t bother me, but the dizziness is a pain in the rear. If I could solve this without solving the congestion and pressure that would be just fine with me.

I am wondering if a deviated septum can cause all of this?

To work properly, the sinuses need adequate mucus drainage.  A deviated septum may cause blockage of the sinuses on that side to the point that the sinuses do not drain as well.  This can cause swelling of the nasal and sinus passages.  As the sinuses become swollen, the drainage openings that lead from each sinus into the nose become blocked.  Both the swelling and the mucus that accumulates in the sealed-off sinus can cause pressure and congestion.  This is a possible explanation of the facial pressure you are feeling over your cheeks and across your forehead.  This can also cause dizziness.

The goal of treatment is to decrease the swelling in the nose and sinus openings, so that sinus drainage improves.  Nasal decongestants or combination antihistamine/decongestants may help with this.  Please discuss these medicines with your doctor to determine which would be most helpful for you.

A nasal wash helps remove mucus and bacteria from the nose and sinuses.  This can temporarily reduce symptoms of sinus pressure.  A prescription nasal steroid spray can decrease nasal swelling and mucus production.  This will prolong the decrease in sinus pressure and improve sinus drainage.  A nasal steroid spray does not provide immediate relief of symptoms.  It may require several weeks of routine use to become effective.  To help the nasal steroid spray work better, use it regularly after doing the nasal wash.  Please read our Nasal Wash MedFact at http://www.nationaljewish.org/medfacts/nasal.html for more information about this technique.  Share this information with your doctor to see if doing nasal washes regularly would be helpful for you.
