Follicular Cystitis

by -concerned...-, Jan 25, 2006 12:00AM
Does anyone know anything about follicular cystitis?  My grandmother has had what the doctors call a bladder infection for going on a year now.  They've given her antibiotics for it, which haven't helped.  Then she went in for a biopsy on her bladder (supposedly a 15 minute procedure) which put her in the hospital for 3 days unable to urinate and in so much pain she could barely move.  Now they're saying she has follicular cystitis.  I tried to do a search online but i didn't come up with much.  If anyone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you!

Follicular cystitis (cystitis follicularis) is a non-cancerous response to chronic bacterial infection. Treatment options for this is limited and may overlap with those for interstitial cystitis.

Pentosan polysulfate sodium and dimethyl sulfoxide are approved for the treatment of chronic cystitis and may be of benefit. You may want to discuss if these medications can be applied to you.

To: concerned.....
I have also been diagnosed with chronic follicular cystitis and at present am being treated with an antihistamine drug "Atarax" (hydroxyzine hydrochloride), for the first time in years I am now getting benefit from prescribed treatment, although I have been told by my consultant that nobody knows the cause of this condition but, form reading these articles it does appear to be linked with  certain forms of arthritis of which I suffer, (spondylosis and spondolitis) I hope this information helps you.
