I have had the same problem also for two years. I have been to many doctors but they seen to think that I am crazy. So, I decided to try things out for myself. I got a sinus rinse kit from the local pharmacy. You can also get these at Wal Mart pharmacy's. Also, I noticed that if i ate foods with sugar or milk products these would make the odor flare up. So I try to avoid these types of foods. But when I dont avoid them I smell poop all the time and smell like it. When you use the sinus rinse kit be sure to use sterile water. You can buy some or boil your own at home. Also I take some chlorophll tablets daily. And when you brush your teeth try to brush back as far as possible. I even take a clean wash cloth and wet it with peroxide (not the entire towel just the part you are going to use) and after that I then use mouth wash on the towel and I wash the back of my tongue and throat area as far as I can reach with my finger. I also clean my entire mouth with the towel. Afterwards rinse with peroxide and mouth wash. hope this helps.
Also do you smell poop or somebody mentioned it to you. Also does the crust produced from the nose smells like poo? By the way how did the smell problem started for you guys?
do you guys experience the dryness in the throat when you guys in heal air?
When you turn on AC/heater in side car and focus it straight to your face, and take a long trip, do you usually get cold like instantly affected by
bronchitis or some sort of cold?
by the way I am same person as umm_, I forgot my password.
Thank you for keeping in touch. Let us try to solve this problem together.
Keep me updated, thanks.
I went to a party over the weekend and I had some alcoholic beverages and the odor started coming back while I was at the party. But after I got home later and cleaned my nose and mouth it was not so bad. I am beggining to think that it has something to do with what I eat and drink. I am not for sure but I used to think it was sinus but it is not that. The sinus rinse really helps me and when I run out of those little packs of salt which comes in the kit. I use regular table salt (make sure it is not iodized or it may or may not burn your nose or irritate it , it is to strong for me ) about a pinch or two to 8 ounces of water three times a day. I was talking to someone in GNC and they said that you can add a drop of essential oil to the rinse just dont add more than that. So I got some peppermint oil. I put 1 drop in 8 ounces of water and it was strong to me so I made some( I used 2 drops but you could try less first) up with a gallon of water and 2 tablespoons salt and it was nice. I even used the peppermint oil ( one drop) on a wet towel to clean my tongue and throat after I use peroxide to help kill the germs and it really helped me some but I have to maintain good hygiene and use the nasal rinse at least twice a day if i can three and cleanse my mouth. I read somewhere online where you can use eucalyptus oil in the rinse but it has to be very diluted. I have not tried this yet so I dont know. Oh when you do the nasal rinse be sure that you let it run down into the throat while rinsing out the nasal area this is important, the kit will explain how to do this when you purchase one.
In my case, the foul smell has been coming in in certain years with periods when I didn't smell too bad. In these short periods of relief of bad smelling I had the chance to find girfriends and socialize for a while.
One day I read an article in the Washington Post in 1999. The title was "Clearing the Air About a Rare Disease".
In the article is mentioned that "researches from around the world gathered at the National Institute of Health for two days with McNeil and other patients". It was the first conference about rare diseases, including "trimethylaminura" (fish malodor syndrome).
This kind of disease which cause bad odor for sure affect the person and people around, so, it says that in 1997 scientists identified a gene that marks the disease, proving it is a hereditary condition. Nevertheless, it was presented as well in 1999 that such diseases can be caused by damage to the liver.
Bad news: as far as 1999, there is no cure.
However, in the conference it was shown that this kind of diesase can be limited to about 75% of patients who try a specialized diet.
Then no surgery is necessary, neither antibiotics and similar methods which were found as causing no cure and neither a relief.
The article gives lots of failures in different kinds of surgeries to eliminate the bad odor in patients from removal of teeth to removing of sweat glands and more. Neither antidepression drugs worked to solve at least in part the bad odor symptoms.
What the article suggests is that the knowlegde of the existence of this kind of disease must be exposed to the general public, and I agree with this because I am a clean person but the rest of people think that I never brush my teeth or take a shower.
A rough estrimate of 1 percent of the world population suffering this disorder implies lots of people, and the article includes examples of how many of the people who suffer of this condition opt for early retirements, jobs where they are practically working without the contact with other people, etc.
Well, as some of the posters here have found out already, changing their diets might help in part to relief partially from bad odors. Unfortunately, the article mentioned that in US not many doctors are aware of this disease, so doctors cannot make referrals to research and found out what kind of diet is the best in each case, I guess in US doctors mostly prefer to use drugs in patients.
I have the copy of the article but I don't know how legal is to transcript it here. If someone can "pay" to copy it and post it here will be great for you and I as well. The Washington Post article was published on Sunday, April 4, 1999, Page CO1. Its author is Avram Goldstein, a Washington Post Writer.
The title of the article is "Clearing the Air About a Rare Disease. Conference Examines Malodor Syndrome.
Let me tell you why thgis article was very useful for me in several cases. Most of the people are not interested at all about our condition as long we stay away from them, but I had to visit a therapist for a while for bak pain. I took the copy of the article and I gave it to the therapist to let him know that I am a clean person but my bad odor is caused by a disease. He understood.
I guess that your teachers and supervisors might understand better if they know about your condition. Maybe the chances to find love increases as well. In my case, I got married and I have children. Like a poster above says that it appears that his parents "don't feel his bad odor", somehow some people get accostumed to it and tolerate you more. But remember, they do feel your bad odor but the foul smell is somehow lesser for them.
I had so many projects which became dreams alone because this disease, however, I'm glad that the disease have been at least recognized and this means that someone cares. I'll hope that in the future a cure is found for it.
