Atherosclerosis - TIA. Aspirin, Wine, Garlic, MSM?

by demtlard, Aug 14, 2007 07:10AM
This is kind of a mixed question dealing with TIA, Atherosclerosis and medications, foods, etc.

About a month ago I thought I was having a TIA, so I went to the ER.  I had a similar but worse feeling 18 months previously, but never visited a doc.  The ER said yes, but the doc said only possibly was it a TIA.

They did an echo on my neck and found mild Atherosclerosis, doc recommends taking an aspirin everyday for life.

Now, the TIA could have been something else, perhaps mild heat stroke, a cold coming on, who knows.
Symptoms included: a sudden dizziness, severe ringing in the ears, this lasted about 2-3 minutes. I had some unbalance, but was generally ok. After a while I did notice some numbness in my finger tips, but I have had a lot of numbness in my hands every morning for the last few months.  I didn't feel good after that for over an hour so I decided to go to the ER just to check. Everything came back fine, they only based their diagnosis on the symptoms.  My BP at the hospital the next day was 140/90. In the ER I don't recall.  A week later my BP was 130/80.  Another week later and it was 119/74.  I have not checked it again in about 3 weeks.  I wonder if the higher BP was just white coat high BP. I asked the doc if it was prehypertention he said no.  Although I do have one member of my family who has a history of high BP.  I am in my early 30's, mostly healthy, but rarely do much exercise.

Ok so my questions are this:

1. Should I be taking Aspirin everyday?
2. Can I still drink wine and take MSM for lower back pain and eat garlic?
I have heard either do one or the other but not both, I am confused.
3. Did I really have a TIA and can Atherosclerosis cause a TIA?

Before I started taking asprin I would wake up in the moring with numbness in my hands and sometimes arms, since taken aspirin that has almost gone completely away.  I also used to wake up for the past six months feeling very itchy around my lower neck and upper chest. No idea why.

I have now been taking an aspirin a day for nearly 5 weeks. I have some issues with continuign to take it, for example my scalp recently seems more red and itchy pretty much all day long.

Someone told me that heavy green veggies can thicken your blood, and I was eating a lot, I am just wondering if all of this is related and actually there is no problem other then what I eat and the amount of exercise I do...

Any opinions would be highly welcomed, sorry for the long post.

I've waited a little over a week, and I am surprised no one has any comments...

Wow over two months and no one has any suggestions?  Is my problem or concern that difficult?

Aspirin does a good job reducing inflammation which contributes to heart disease and a myriad of other diseases. Inflammation has been called the "silent killer". However, long term use of Aspirin can be harmful to your health, and your body will eventually develop a resistance to it. Since Aspirin is such a strong blood thinner, I do not recommend that you take it in conjunction with natural blood thinners such as garlic and MSM. I suggest that you gradually reduce your dosage of Aspirin and increase your intake of natural blood thinners and anti-inflammatory agents. Garlic and MSM can be taken together as well as ginger, turmeric, fish oil and borage oil. All of these are known to reduce inflammation, improve circulation and lower bad cholesterol. Red wine in moderation is also beneficial to your health, but if you would rather not drink alcohol, you could add grape seed extract to your vitamin regimen. I cannot say whether you actually suffered a TIA, but you most likely did, as TIA can certainly result from Atherosclerosis.
