Low Potassium Question

by julid, Aug 14, 2007 02:04PM
Hi, I'm not sure if I'm in the right forum or not, but I have a question regarding low potassium.  I'm currently on Hydrocholorothizide 12mg 1x daily for high blood pressure and have had blood work done a couple of time showing below normal potassium levels.  My doctor put me on prescription potassium for several months now and I still have below normal potassium levels on my latest blood work.  I've also lost 20 lbs over the last 4 months (current weight 128 lbs.) and have been eating tons of fresh veggies and fruits high in potassium.  My question is.....what else could be causing the low potassium besides the blood pressure meds?  I understand that this blood pressure med is NOT the potassium-sparing type....is that correct?  With the potassium supplement and diet rich in potassium, is it still common to have below normal levels?  I'm also very fatigued, shortness of breath, dizzy spells, and a lot of right hip/leg pain.  My doctor's comment to my concerns is "add more potassium to diet and see me in 3 months".

Any help/comments would be greatly appreciated!  Thanks!!
