colour perception following cataract surgery

by Roncanada, Aug 15, 2007 12:53PM
My 95 year old mother has just had cataract surgery. She reports discomfort with colour perception - too bright and vivid. Seems like a plus but she is most uncomfortable with this. Any idea what this is and if it will fade?

The cataract is a dirty brown color that acts like an internal pair of sunglasses. For many, many years she has had the light filtered by these cataracts. Now she is seeing through a crystal clear implant. Seeing brighter is a good thing. Most eye surgeons or hospitals or ASCs provide "cataract goggles) to wear during the first few weeks after surgery.

Generally by the time glasses are prescribed usually 3-6 weeks post op the eye has made the adjustments. If still somewhat sensitive a tint can be put in the new glasses.
