Is preterm labor genetic?

Hey girls. I was just wondering if preterm labor can run in families? My mom keeps telling me to expect to have my son early because she never made it past 37 weeks with any one of her 7 kids. Should I expect to be the same way? I'm going to mention it to my doctor next time I go, but just wanted to know if anyone has any answers. Thanks!

well, my mom was overdue with both of hers, and my older 2 were overdue? soooo maybe??? , my 3rd was induced 2 weeks early. I don't think you should bank on it though.

It can definitely be genetic. But, never certainly. It depends greatly on the cause though. Spontaneous preterm delivery w/ no known cause tends to be genetic.

well in my family my grandma was early, my grandma had my mom and uncle early, and my mom had my sister (older) 2wks early and me at 28wks so that looks like it might be genetic so ...also i have had 2 episodes now with preterm contractions that had to be stopped with a shot of tributoline or whatever...so he may come early i hope not though i keep telling him hes not done baking yet i'm crossing my fingers

My mom had 3 kids on schedule and I was born at 27 weeks!!! So far, my sister who was born on time had a baby that was born on her due date but I went into labor at 29 weeks. SO...who knows, but they seem to think there may be a coorelation!
