My daughter recently had blood in her urine and was in extreme pain.  It was 9:00 pm. and her regular physicians office was closed.  Is it wiser to seek immediate attention for these symptoms or should one try to tough it out until the next day?  I have a history of urinary tract infections and as a result have developed scar tissue in my bladder.  In my daughters case, I chose the emergency room as treatment, which I was later told was unnecessary by her father and stepmother.  What is the best action to take if this should occur again?

If there is extreme pain, I would suggest medical care immediately.

A kidney stone can present this way, as well as a lower urinary tract or kidney infection.

Whether an ER visit is "unnecessary" can't be predicted before the evaluation.

Tests to consider would be a urinalysis, as well as CT scan of the pelvis to rule out a stone and evaluate the kidneys.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.

i would have done the same thing, they can get worse and urinary tract infections dont go away, they really only get worse. its your daughter and im sure the father barely knows what a uti is i think that the step mother doesnt have a say. anyhow i belive you did the right thing! i sure would have brought her. the faster a uti goes away the better!

I also had this and it was a kidney stone, I went to the emergency room and they did a cat scan, if she is in extreme pain I would defintely take her to the ER Kidney stones are excruciating, I also had blood, her father and stepmother are definetly WRONG!
