toxoplasmosis question

by michele022685, Aug 26, 2007 09:05PM
I am currently 8 months pregnant and i just got a kitten, my DH understands that he is the one who needs to change the litter until i am done breastfeeding and is completly ok with this, my question is i wrongfully understood that you could not touch the cat urine not the cat feces and the cat has popped on my floor a couple times and i have picked it up sometimes with my bare hand, What do you think that my risk of getting Toxoplasmosis from this and what are some of the symptoms as i am very worried now

Have you ever had a cat? Ever worked in a garden? If so, chances are you have already been exposed to it and have built up your tolerance to it.

If concerned, definitely bring it up to your doctor.

If the feces are fresh, oddly enough, you're OK.  It takes two days for the parasite or virus or whatever it is (LOL) to be transmissable from the feces.  (The urine is not the problem.)  It is in fact commoner to get toxo from gardening (your hands in the soil) than from a cat.  The cat has to have toxoplasmosis, first of all, and it doesn't carry it forever, it gets over it.  So you are probably fine.  :)  Don't tell your husband, it's really nice to have someone else clean the litter box when you're taking care of a little baby.  (I don't think it matters during breastfeeding either, I think it's only during pregnancy.  Don't tell him that either.)  Talk to your doc or google toxoplasmosis for better information.
