Have to make a big decision

by toughluck, Aug 28, 2007 09:39PM
I was supposed to start a trial with a protease inhibitor ( Wyeth Labs ) along with the standard peg, interferon and rib. Was all excited went today for a follow up and was told the plug was pulled on the Wyeth program, and could start the standard 48 week Peg, Int and rib, I said I will have to think about this first. I am geno 1A stage 2 level 1 with a recent viral load at 900k, I want to kill this f--king thing, do I wait for VX 950 or just go for the standard treatment.

You could consider deferring a decision for a while.  You may have the luxury of some time and maintaining your 'never been treated' status could benefit you later if are considered for vx.  Assuming that you have, in some way, established an 'in' to at least be considered for the Wyeth program, may be same could apply for vx.  Maybe spend a little time networking with your doc and getting to be 'known' at the nearest vx site - maybe the Weyth site also is involved in vx.  I'd consider letting a bus or two pass by and then jump on the express if it serves your neighborhood.  Take your time.  Eventually, it could come down to 50% chance after 48 weeks or a much better chance in many fewer weeks.  I know how you feel about getting rid of the stuff.  You've had it for a while - it's just that you know it now.

Just knowing you have it really sucks, now it is decide what to do like you said. I will look for a VX trial thanks. Are all these new drugs protease inhibitors?

some are polymerase inhibitors - the distinction goes over my head though.  VX is protease.  Keep an eye on clinicaltrials.gov and the vrtx webisite for updates to future phase trial opportunities.  Talk to your doc too.

you have a very good position.
you have very little damage and have the option to tx or wait.
i would love to be in your position.
1 more year or 2 is not too long to wait and see? i would even now.
why rush when new and better options are on the very near horizon? like fl says, 50% chance is not real good if a much better and shorter tx looks so close.
relax, enjoy life, and give it a year or two.
then come back and thank me.

once again. why do you feel you NEED to tx now if you have no sides and low stage biopsy.

1 or 2 years is not a long time to sit and enjoy your life (side free) while waiting to see if these new and very revolutionary treatments will be approved. you can tx at any time later.

if you choose to tx now from fear so be it.

but, you have options i wish i had. you CAN wait for the trial data to be released BEFORE MAKING YOUR DECISION.
you say you "want to kill this f**** thing.

at the risk or one year of misery for such a small chance of victory(50%)?????

i would kill to have that year back.

lots of luck

I felt like you when I was diagnosed last year.  I just had to do anything I could to get rid of the virus.  One year on, after drawing the short straw (no riba) in the VX trials and failing that and SOC, I still have the virus and my mind and body have been trashed big time by the drugs.  I can't get that year back and getting my health back and the will to live will take a while.

If somebody had told me this last year I would not have listened.

But - doin --- It's the roll of the dice. I got lucky --- some others don't.

You might be lucky on the next roll... You're still young... KEEP THE WILL TO LIVE...

KEEP THE WILL TO FIGHT!!!!

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!

That is the MOST important thing. Believe...
