pelvic ultrasound results

by mimilou1, Aug 29, 2007 10:02AM
can I ask a question about the results of my pelvic ultrasound.  If this is not the right forum, please let me know.  These results are confusing and all my PCP told me was that I had a large fibroid tumor in my uterus and I need to to go to a GYN.  It says I have a 8 cm fibroid inside my uterus and that my uterus size is 16.0 X 9.9 X 8.1 CM.  .  I am 39 and I have 2 teenagers.  It's been well over 15 years since I've been pregnant.  It also says my endometrial stripe is 13mm.  I am having pain in my lower back and lower left abdomen.  Pain also goes down my left thigh, making it feel a little weak sometimes when I stand up.  I have very heaving mentrual flow and it is irregular.  Is this normal for a fribroid and is my uterus size normal?

Hello,

Your ultrasound report notes you indeed have a large fibroid uterus.  Fibroids are very common, affecting anywhere between 50-75% of women.  Many women have small fibroids, which they never become aware of; others like yourself have large fibroids that can result in heavy menses, and pelvic/abdominal discomfort.  A normal size uterus is about the size of one's fist, so yes your uterus is enlarged.

When you meet with your gynecologist they will review your ultrasound results, discuss your symptoms and discuss various ways of managing uterine fibroids.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing
