Mystery case of chlamydia

by withquestions, Aug 30, 2007 08:34AM
I am 37 and pregnant with my third child.  At 12 weeks I tested positive
for Chlamydia.  I had a second test from a different lab which also
confirmed positive.
The first was DNA, the second NAAT, both Nonculture.
I was last tested (negative) for Chlamydia during a previous pregnancy
almost 2 years ago.
I have not been with anyone other than my husband for more than 10 years
and I trust that he has not been either.
Given that, how could I have contracted Chlamydia? Are there any issues
with pregnancy that may lead to (2) false positive test results?

Thanks,

Hello,

No, nothing about pregnancy should result in a false positive.  However, the test itself (both the DNA and NAAT), regardless of pregnancy, can be false positive (although the chances of this are very low).  A repeat test within 3 weeks of the original can result in a false positive as the DNA from the dead bacteria may be detected by the probe prior to their being cleared from the body.

I would assume this is a true positive, and have you and your husband properly treated.  If it then still returns positive (after adequate treatment and the proper retesting time interval) ask your physician to explore why this might be the case.

Best regards,

Dr. Downing

Can you get pregnant after having a ectopic pregnancy?
This ectopic pregnancy was 6 years ago. The Dr. says that the other tube was clogged and that it would be a 1% chance of pregnancy. I want to have a baby and I want to know can they determine if the other tube isn't clogged.

                                                                                    Thanks,

Dear Dr. Keith, I have resently had a tubal reversal done infact it has been one year, any way became preg , misscarried. Had histosal in may told that tubes were blocked, now after Sept. mensus around ovulation, charting ovulation praying there is stil chance, I have experenced brown blood and pinkish red. if tube was blocked would this be possible? And if so do you suggest any options that are possible. I do not have means for anorther reversal or IVF.

                                                                                                            Thank you

i too had a "mystery case" of chlamydia in my 32nd week of pregnancy with my son.....my doctor was doing all the final cultures preparing for the birth and she told me i was positive for chlamydia ....i was negative at the beginning of my pregnancy. she asked me if there was any chance i thought my husband may have been cheating on me....and i am positive that wasn't the case....and i know for sure that i haven't been with anyone other than my husband...so the mystery was "where did this come from?" however....i got word that 2 of my female co-workers who were not pregnant also tested positive and we did all share a bathroom. i know the logical answer is that you cannot contractan STD from a toilet seat....but i have to believe that it IS possible because there couldn't have been another answer to my problem unless the test was a false +.  i have had many Drs, nurses, and nurse practitioners ( i work in a Dr's office) argue this theory with me but i still believe that it CAN be possible to spread from a toilet.....as crazy as it may sound but there is no other logical answer to how i contracted it.  hope this helps... m. andras

Dear Dr. Downing,

Around September 17th of 2007 i started having symtoms of having Chlamydia. But a couple days later they started to go away. There was no foul  smell anymore but a little discharge was still present. At this time my boyfriend was on a trip for about a week. He returned aroung the 22nd and
i then had my period on that same day. The fouls smell started again on the 3rd of October and i visited the clinic on the 8th which unfortunately was my birthday but i just needed to know that day.I then found out that i was tested positive for having Chlamydia. I have been with my bf for 2 yrs and he has insisted that he hasnt cheated on me at any point of our relationship. He is my not my first bf but he is the first that i have had sexual contact with. He is saying that he could have previously contracted it from his pervious relationship which was about more than 2 yrs ago. my question is can chlamydia stay in the body that long and just appear when it wants to because i am now getting the symtoms and this is the first time i have had these kind of symtoms in the space of 2 years. I have had a yeast infection before but i know that is common in women. Well i hope i reach you in good health and hope to hear from you soon.    Shaq
