HEART AND EPILEPSY

by VALENCIA PETERSON, Mar 06, 2000 12:00AM
HELLO AGAIN

I HAVE POSTED ONCE BEFORE AND YOU WERE SO HELPFUL I THOUGHT I WOULD ASK ANOTHER BRIEF QUESTION. I AM PRESTLY ON LAMICTAL I JUST STARTED AND I SEEM TO BE TOLERATING IT EXCEPT I HAVE HAD TO START TAKING NADOLOL. MY HEART WAS REALLY GOING CRAZY. IS THIS A RESULT OF THE MEDICINE YOU THINK. MY HEART DOCTOR NEVER HEARD OF LAMICTAL BEFORE. COULD THE MEDICINES BE WORKING AGAINST EACH OTHER? I AM NOW VERY TIRED MAYBE A DIRECT SIDE EFFECT FROM BOTH MEDICINES. I AM DUE TO GO TO MY NEUROLOIST SOON BUT I CAN ONLY HOPE SHE DOESN'T THINK I AM MAKING UP THINGS. I'LL HAVE A HEART MONITOR REPORT AS MY PROOF THOUGH! THANKS IN ADVANCE

Dear Ms. Peterson:

Lamictal can induce heart problems, but this is very unlikely in humans.  All the studies that showed problems with conduction problems were in dogs and this has not yet been found with humans.  If this proves to be a problem in you, then your physician should report it to the FDA as it would be the first.  The most likely reason for your being tired is the beta blocker.  This is one of the most common side effects of this type of medication.

Sincerely,
