Intracranial Hypertension

by Mike, Dec 05, 2000 12:00AM
Since March I have been experiencing intense pressure in the back and sides of my head with cold sensations in my hands and feet.  I have also experienced many permanent vision changes,  floaters,  extreme dryness,  pulsating in vision,  always light sensitive,  quick flashes of light,  distorted side vision etc.   At first the episodes came and went,  however it has now become a daily event.   I have had normal test results from MRI/CT and  lab work.   My neuro does not know what it is however she is attempting to treat me for complicated migraine.   I have discussed the possibility of Intracranial Hypertension however my MRI did not show enlarged ventricles and my vision exam showed a normal optic nerve.  My questions,  is it possible to have this condition and still have a normal MRI and optic nerve?  Should I ask for a spinal tap and have the pressures checked?

Dear Mike:

For the length of time you have had your symptoms, it would be doubtful with a normal MRI and opthalmological exam that you would have increased intracranial pressure.  Distortion of vision, flashes of light can be related to complicated migraine.  It might be that you have transformed migraine as your symptoms are daily.  However, to have the cold sensations in all your extremities every day, would be alittle unusual.  Anyway, I would not recommend a spinal tap at this point.

Sincerely,
