Muscular Cramp and Back Ache for last 2 years

by gulenyuz, Nov 03, 2004 12:00AM
I've had a weird sort of back ache for around 2 years (I'm 33) for which I haven't really been able to find a cure. It started when I started going to the gym (I go to the gym on-off since 16) I was ambitious so as usual I overtrained; bodybuilding, cardiovascular and aerobics on the same day! .. and after a while I fould that my back was seizing. I didn't pay much attention at first, thinking it would go away but after 3 months it never really went away. In fact a couple of times it got so worse that I couldn't even stand straight because there'd be an enormous pain which would instantly go upon sitting sideways. Even worse I couldn't even lie in bed with my legs straight, would have to curl to one side and would wake up in the morning much worse than the previous night. When I had films taken, I saw that especially 2 or the vertebrae near the bottom were very close together. My orthopedist said that the muscles had contracted there, and that's appox. what I was feeling. None of the doctors really could come up on a unified solution .. and I tried relieving the pain with gamaflex, which had absolutely no effect. Then when takling with a G.P. she recommended cataflam and I instantly felt relief .. in fact I turned back to normal in one week. When I got off it the pains would slowly come back slowly after about a week. I'm not too bad these days, but the main problem is that the back does start to ache very easily when I stand up too long or similar. I'm actually suspicious this is a neurological disorder. I haven't been to a neurologist yet. Would you recommend this .. ?

I would recommend that you see a neurologist. This could either be due to muscle irritation, or due to irritation of the nerves. After a neurologist examines you they may want an MRI of the spine, and an EMG test (measures the function of the muscles and nerves). This will help to differentiate the actual cause of your pain. Good luck.
