EEG results and epilepsy

by TJC67, Dec 29, 2004 12:00AM
Thank you for the responses to my previous questions; I have one last follow-up question.

I have had 2 abnormal EEG's, one sleep deprived in February, one 4 day ambulatory in August; both showed sharp waves across the left temporal lobe. The MRI's have been normal. Diagnosis is propensity to have seizures(partial complex); have been on Topamax and Keppra.

Is it possible to have this type of EEG results and not have epilepsy?  If so what else could it mean?

Thanks for your time.

The EEG merely indicates that your brain has the potential to have seizures. If in addition to this EEG you have a history of recurrent spells suggestive of seizures, then the clinical diagnosis of epilepsy can be made. The only way to confirm the diagnosis electrically would be to capture a seizure while an EEG was running. We due see sharp waves in some patients who do not have seizures or epilepsy, and again it merely indicates that they are more likely to have seizures then someone who does not. Good luck.
