Spinal MRI

by lafbm, Jan 26, 2005 12:00AM
I've been diagnosed with Fibromyalgia but also have been being seen for possible MS.  At last appt Nuerologist said he doesn't belive it's MS but has ordered a spinal MRI.  I had one of my head in Nov and it showed possible demylenting disease but Nuero tells me it's not MS but to be sure ordered the spinal MRI.  Is this going to be of my entire spine right up to my head including my head and what is the purpose of this.  I have severe Fibromyalgia and am in great pain, exhausted and have burning/tingling sensations in my hands and feet and sometimes up my right leg.  I also get migraines which he said the white spots could be from.  I have balance and coordination problems.  I have been out of work since July mostly due to the pain and exhaustion that do not seem to ever go away.  Can you reply please?  Does Fibromyalgia really cause a person to be this sick - I am not a depressed person (am getting to be depressed as this just won't go away).  I do exercises as much as possible, meditate, a little yoga, etc.  I also take muscle relaxers and colanzapan for my tremors.  Do you feel this could be more than just Fibromyalgia or more, and could the MRI show more than just possible MS.  Please help.

I cannot tell what your Doctor has ordered without seeing his order - 'Spinal' MRI could be anything from the whole spine to part of it

MS can affect the cervical spine commonly and this may be what he is looking for. Other things like spinal cord or root compression will show up on the MRI also, if present. Sensation and balance problems together can come from within the spinal cord, so the MRI will be able to help answer this question also

I cannot tell you whether this is fibromyalgia or not over the internet - have you seen a rheumatologist?

while burning pain in the feet and hands may be a peripheral nerve problem and this could be evaluated further by a neurologist if your doctor thought this is appropriate eg EMG or skin biopsy
