Dark ring in vision- now with a picture to diagnose.

by matthew82, Sep 06, 2007 01:36PM
Went to the doctor. Doctor says he doesn't know what it is. Currently waiting for a referral to a specialist.

Please, See: www.americansale.com/images/effect.jpg

This is a rendering of what I see when I wake up in the mornings or are exposed to dark light for some time. To see it, I just hold my head firmly still and strain my eyes a bit to look to the side. Both eyes seem equally effected. This doesn't happen during the day or when I've been in normal light for some time.

I would of guessed phosphene, but I don't see light, I see dark.

WHAT IS IT?!

I went to an optometrist (D.O.) and he took a picture of my retina and macula, and he couldn't find anything. I am currently waiting to see my GP to get a referral to see a specialist, but in the mean time I am puzzled. The optometrist didn't know what was wrong, and neither did the doctors at some other forums. I've also been searching google for weeks and nothing comes up.

Hello Mathew82    Since it's in both eyes, only present when you look to the side and not present in daylight, I too must admit I'm stumped (without of course looking in your eyes). If it was just one eye I would suspect fluid under the macula usually central serous retinopathy.

Please let us know what the ophthalmologist says.

Thanks for posting the picture.

JCH,

It is pretty much a mystery.

Another strange symptom I have is that when I first wake up (like first 30 seconds), the effect of blinking leaves a dark spot that lingers for a second in my central field of vision.

Although, I can't say for sure this is not something that has always happened to me. If it did happen before, I wasn't super-sensitive to anything concerning my eyes and I may not have noticed it.
