Obsessive Picking :o)

I understand that the forum that I originally found this is was closed to questions so I figured I would start something in here.  I am currently a person who picks at themselves obsessively and like many others it is not the only thing in my life that I can be obsessive with.  I am a cleaner, for the most part it gets to the point where I have to force myself to stop just so I can go to bed.

The Obsessive picking seems to come in when I am bored.  If I have nothing I am doing currently at that moment..  there I am picking at something, a small bump on my arm, or a scab that has formed over something.  I too seem to have that transe like state when I pick.  I was a smoker and it got worse for me when I quit.  What I found works the best for me,because I refuse to put myself on medication for lifes little things, is to read, draw, play mindless games on the computer..  Anything really to stop the boredom feeling.  Once I get mindlessly into something else I feel no need to pick.  Yes I still do it once in a while but it is not as bad.  You would be amazed at how even keeping a journal on the computer to type **** in can help..  Keep the fingers busy,   Now the only time it is at the worst is when I am in the car driving for a while, I start scratching my head and four hours later my scalp hurts..  this is where the smoking helped unfortunately :o)
So to anyone looking for a non medicated way to stop or curb the picking, try finding something to keep the hands busy before you start.  :o)

I have a niece that does the same.  She has been diagnosed with OCD and is beginning to get well.
Perhaps looking at some self help for OCD.

I used to be a chronic nail biter, and quit in 2002 only to develope another disgusting habit. I pick my scalp. I am afraid the longer I continue I am going to go bald. I want to stop, and everyday I tell myself I am not going to do it but it happens anyway. I don't want to take any medications for OCD, is there any herbal supplements that I can take?
