death

by granny76636, Sep 11, 2007 01:21PM
I was in the room with my father when he passed away. Approx. 20 minutes before he was "called", a terrible ammonia scent filled the room. Was this due to the chemical changes in his body? He also had sores inside his mouth from the ventilator. Is there any reasonable explanation to this over powering smell?

Thank you.

Granny-

First of all, I am sorry to hear of your father's passing, may he rest in peace.  I've been a health care aide for a year and yes; I have heard of people smelling terrible before death.  I can't really recall an instance where I have experienced it.  But working in nursing homes; yes, I have experienced 'many' unpleasant smells.  When people age their body goes through SO many changes.  It definitely makes sense that chemicals in the body could have caused the smell.  He was probably on medications right? He probably had many health problems. It really could have been A LOT of things.  It could have been his breath, combined with sores in the mouth.  I don't know if I have helped or not, I hope so.  Take care.
