blurry vision after vitrectomy

by huberd, Sep 15, 2007 12:52AM
I'm high myopic (now -10 in GP contacts); was reading at 20/20 prior to retinal detachment that was small and did not involove the macula; 11 weeks post viterectomy and I'm seeing 20/40 with 2 additional diopters of power!; my reading vison is good however; yesterdays's retina studies of the eye are good according to surgeon - no swelling or fluid build up; 2 different contact lens specialists say 20/40 is the best they can offer and said I had high astigmatism; did the surgery cause this seemingly permanent and "uncorrectable" blurry vision?  Are there treatment options? There are several options:  1. seek a second opinion from another retinal surgeon. You need to rule out macular edema and macular epi-retinal membrane or macular hole. You will need an Amsler grid test (You can do a search on Amsler Grid, print one off and do it at home). You will need an macular OCT.

If high astigmatism is the cause see a corneal refractive surgeon ophthalmologist and discuss your options to correct it.

Something is causing the reduced vision and you need to keep digging. Vitrectomies don't usually cause high astigmatism unless a scleral buckle was put on the eye. Was your eye 'buckled"?  What is your new glasses prescription?

To: Vitrectomy Very Blurry
I am three days into recovery on my vitrectomy for left eye. On my right eye after the same surgery I had very clear vision by 24 hurs after the surgery. This time the left eye is so blury I cannot see to read the computer screen at all. I have had black striations that come accroos my vision now and then, like a cheese cloth kind of thing. Not present at all times and I have noticed them more on first getting up out of bed. My doctor saw me yesterday and said there was no retinal tearing and he didn't see any bleeding in the eye and felt things were going to heal and my eye needed time. Can you give me information as to why the eye is so blury, what is causing it to be blury this time and not last time and how long it will take to clear? Is this normal?

These are good questions and something you should ask your surgeon. As a generalization same type surgeries are usually not exact clones. If someone has two hip operations they will probably find one hurt more than the other and one healed faster and perhaps works better, same with any type.  Your experience may be normal for THIS eye at THIS time.

My detached retina in left eye began 10/21/07. It has detached 3 more times and been repaired each time. However, I have not been able to see clearly since the 1st surgery on 10/25/07.  I was told by the last surgeon that the retina is wrinkled & I will never have 20/20 vision even with glasses. I am very nearsighted with astigmatism in both eyes. If I close my good eye, the sight in the left eye is very blurred and looks like looking through fog and the computer screen is just one big white blurred rectangular. I get very bad headaches everyday.

To: Anyone who can give me some info
I'm ***@****. I had a FOV four days ago. I still have lots of blurriness, major dilation, as well as redness on my eye. When I move my left eye to the right (it's my left eye I had the surgery on) I see a wierd black sort of veil circle getting darker then lighter -- sort of like the dark cheese effect someone described earlier.  The doc said on my day after surgery visit that everything looks normal and good with his scopes. Anybody know if that type of thing is normal and just part of the healing (and perhaps from the swelling on the eye at this point?

Please email me at ***@**** if you have any info. Thanks.

Call your doctor now. Your email does not show up here. You describe a symptom that could mean retina problems.
