Painful red rash - face, neck legs

by kateb, Sep 15, 2007 05:03AM
Hello, can you help please?

My mother has been suffering for a few years now from a strange type of red rash that flares up every so often.  The rash appears on the side of her face, below her ear and extends towards her jaw.  It's very painful and she sometimes winces as it seems to throb.  Her face is swollen in the area.  Initially she was treated for rosacea but the doctor no longer thinks it is. She was given hydrocortizone cream which helps a little bit.

There was some talk of the sun causing this problem, but it happens now when she hasn't been out in the sun (she never sunbathes, she is fair skinned).  One doctor suggests it is an allergy of some kind.  She now wears no makeup and has stopped using creams.

My mum suffers from stress and it appears to be linked with the apperance of this rash.  When it is at its worst it spreads to her arms and legs.

Do you have any idea what causes this and how we can prevent it?   It is worth seeing a skin specialist for something like this?  It is really effecting her quality of life at times.  She is 69.

Many thanks
Kate

If it is effecting the quality of her life then she should definitely see a dermatologist or other specialist. If it seems to come with stress she may also want to consider seeing a Social Worker, Psychologist, or some other type of counselor to help evaluate her stress and ways she can manage her stress. If she is opposed to seeing a therapist she could try to increase her exersise and try yoga - these are both excellent stress reducers. Good Luck!

Hi,

She could take some oral antihistamine or antiallergic medications like loratadine or cetrizine and see if it helps with her symptoms. Apply calamine lotion at the site of the lesions to help soothe the symptoms.

You would still need to reconsult her doctor about the associated symptoms she is  having and to rule out a bacterial or fungal infection and whether she needs a course of antibiotics or other medications.

Let us know about how she is doing and post us about what the doctor advises.

Regards
