Pinkeye after treated STD

by Aldo Bangkok, Sep 17, 2007 11:43PM
Dear Doctor,

About ten days ago I developed the symptoms of an STD (burning sensation when urinating, yellow discharge from the urethra), which was diagnosed as gonorrhea. The doctor said it might be something like chlamydia as well, but didn't do any tests. I was given an intravenous antibiotic and had antibiotic capsules (azithromycin) for four days, at the end of which my urological problems had disappeared. However, I'm now having a pinkeye problem that makes me wonder if it may be associated to the STD. Actually, I started having eye irritation a couple of days before my STD was diagnosed, but I it was mild and I gave it no importance, I just discontinued using my contact lenses for a few days. And of course, I didn't mention my eye irritation to my urologist. My eyes are getting redder now, specially after I finished taking the antibiotic (although it could be a coincidence).

My questions are: What are the chances that my eye redness could be produced by the same bacteria that were responsible for my urinary infection? Was the antibiotic treatment that I received not enough for curing also this (hypothetical) eye infection? Should I be extremely careful not to transmit these (supposed) bacteria back to my urinary tract? Am I supposed to mention my STD case to my ophthalmologist, when I visit them? I might add here that I live in a tropical area, where the agents causing a pinkeye can be many. Thanks a lot for your advise!
