Dear Juliana Vanaman:  Sometimes, when a screening mammogram is done, a density will appear.  It is not uncommon to ask a person to come back for additional views or spot compression.  Many times the density can be further characterized or may even disappear on compression.  If the density remains and looks suspicious or cannot be defined, a biopsy may be necessary to determine what it is.  Unfortunately, scans are not perfect and biopsy is the only way to make certain of the nature of a density.  In some cases, a biopsy can be done with a needle, in other situations a surgical biopsy is preferred. You may wish to discuss the options with your doctor.
