Blurry Vision After Retinal Detachment

I am a high myopic (-11 in GP contacts); just recently had a R.D. & vitrectomy in right eye with laser/cryo & a non-expanding gas air bubble (the R.D. did not come close  to involving the macula &  I was reading 20/20 with corrective contacts pre- surgery); I'm 11 weeks post surgery & back wearing contacts, with 2 additional diopters but can only get to 20/40 in the right eye. Surgeon just sent me to a contact lens specialist who said I had high astigmatism & that the contacts I have currently are the best he could offer.  Did the vitrectomy cause this blurry distance vision? My reading vision is good.  The surgeon just conducted a retina study & it looks good, no swelling/fluid build up. Any possible answers or potential treatments?  17 years ago I had a non-circling buckling procedure on the left eye after a similar small area of R.D. by the same surgeon w/o complications, other than a shimmering area with a blind spot that is consistently there (damage from laser / cryo?).  Given this constantly shimmering & blind spot in left eye, I am concerned that I can't achieve 20/20 in my recently corrected right eye - it now has a similar shimmering area of vision - both visual defects are in my extreme peripheral vision.  Had MRIs in the past & saw neuro- opthomologist - without explanation for visual defect?  Neither surgeon or 2 different opthomologists trying to fit me with contacts/glasses can explain my blurry vision since my macula was not involved in R.D. & my retina have healed without complication.  Could I still be healing 11 weeks post vitrectomy surgery?  Is uncorrectable astigmatism a possible complication of vitrectomy surgery?  Could my lens have been damaged from exposure to O2 during the surgery? Only "nominal" cataracts  are visible. Would a IOC lens implant correct astigmatism, are glasses a better choice? Looking into eye glass prescription from Canada - thinner polycarbonate lens material. Thoughts?

Sorry Timmy1 but if your retina was detached at birth and that eye has bad vision it is highly unlikely that putting the retina back in place would improve your vision.

Obviously the most important thing is keeping your other eye healthy. That means annual exams by an Eye MD physician (ophthalmologist), avoiding activities with high chance of eye injury, wearing eye protection for things like mowing yard, power tools, firearms, firecrackers, racquet sports, etc. Also don't smoke, exercise, watch your diet and weight.

Your vision can keep improving for months after RD surgery even with the macual on so don't panic.  20/40 after and RD with vitreectomy at 11 weeks if quite good so far. Your cataract may well progress but you don't want to consider surgery until the vision is much more blurred and removing it will not help the astigmatism.  Uncorrectable astigmatism is not a complication of your surgery. Be patient and keep your followup appointments. It sounds like you are receiving excellent care
