cough

My sister has had a cough and has been going to a doctor for it since April.  She finally went to an urgent care facility and they said she has an enlarged liver and a wavy diaphram and that she should go to her provider asap. And that there is a possibility that she has cancer. What does a wavy diaphram mean.

I am unfamiliar with the term wavy diaphragm, but I suspect it refers to irregularity of the diaphragm caused by an enlarged liver with an irregular surface.  The liver is normally below the diaphragm and contiguous with it so that the contour of the diaphragm will change as the surface of the liver changes.  Tumor masses are one thing that can change the surface of the liver.

Your sister will need a CT scan of the liver and may need an ultrasound of the liver and a liver biopsy.

One should not run to judgment that this must be cancer.  There are many other causes of cough and of changes in liver size and shape.  However lung cancer can cause cough and, not infrequently, metastasizes to the liver.

Good luck
